KeyScrambler User Manual & Tutorial

I. Major Components:

1. The User Interface

The little overlay window that appears in one of the corners on your computer screen is KeyScrambler's user interface. It consists of KeyScrambler logo; display of keystrokes being encrypted realtime; and OPTIONS button and POSITIONS button.

2. The Tray Icon

The KeyScrambler tray icon appears in the tray area after installation. It changes colors to let you know KeyScrambler's operating status: GREEN = ACTIVE; YELLOW = INACTIVE (that the app in use is not protected by KeyScrambler); RED = TURNED OFF.

3. The OPTIONS Dialog

The OPTIONS dialog provides information about KeyScrambler's default settings. You can click on any of the five tabs -- General, Display, Update, Advanced, About -- for relevant options to customize KeyScrambler for your computer. 4. The Mini Menu

Right-clicking the KeyScrambler tray icon will bring up the Mini Menu, where you can do a few things with a quick click.

5. The Installer

Consists of two parts, the download part and the installer.

II. Download and install (~1.2MB; ~2 minutes.)

To install KeyScrambler, your computer must have:
- Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit); and
- Internet connection.

The first step, DOWNLOAD:

- Click on "Download";
- Save the file "KeyScrambler_Setup.exe" to a folder on your computer. The default download folder is usually the "Desktop".

The second step, INSTALL:

- Go to the "Desktop" (or the folder you've just saved "KeyScrambler_Setup.exe" to) and double-click the file to start installation;
- Follow through the simple directions in the installer until finish.

The third step, RESTART your computer:

- Choose "Restart Now" to complete the installation. This step is necessary the first time you install KeyScrambler.

Once installation is completed, KeyScrambler is on all the time without you having to do anything. When you type in a protected app, the small overlay window will appear in the top left corner of your screen (default position) and you can see KeyScrambler encrypting your keystrokes live. When you are not typing, in four seconds the overlay window will fade away.

III. Major Functions:

  • Uninstall:
  • Click "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "KeyScrambler".

  • Reinstall:
  • Simply repeat the download and installation steps.

  • Stop running Pro or Premium:
  • Right-click the KeyScrambler Tray Icon to bring up the Mini Menu and select "Exit".

  • Resume running Pro or Premium:
  • Click on "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "KeyScrambler" -> "KeyScrambler".

  • Turn KeyScrambler on/off (4 ways):
  • 1. Use the hotkey combination (Ctr+Shift+K).

    2. Double-click the tray icon.

    3. Right-click on the tray icon to bring up the mini menu and select your preference.

    4. Click "Options" in the mini menu to bring up the OPTIONS dialog and unselect "Enable KeyScrambler Protection".

  • Bring up the OPTIONS dialog (3 ways):
  • 1. Click on the OPTIONS button in the overlay window.

    2. Right-click on the tray icon to bring up the mini menu and then click "Options".

    3. Click on "Tools" in the browser menu and select "KeyScrambler".

  • Change the location of the overlay window (2 ways):
  • 1. Click the POSITIONS button in the overlay window.

    2. Bring up the OPTIONS dialog and click on "Display". Then select from "Location".

  • Hide the overlay window or tray icon or both:
  • Bring up the OPTIONS dialog and click on "Display". Then unselect "Both" near the bottom of the dialog.

  • Bring back the overlay window or tray icon or both:
  • Click on "Start" -> "All Programs" -> "KeyScrambler" -> "KeyScrambler Options". Then check both.

  • Turn off Asian languages support:
  • Bring up the OPTIONS dialog and click on "Advanced". Then unselect "Support East Asian Language Input".

  • Distinguish unencrypted keystrokes:
  • This option exists under the "Advanced" tab. It is a compatibility setting for software that generates keystrokes, such as on-screen keyboards, remote desktop software, etc. When this option is turned on, KeyScrambler will ignore such keystrokes instead of trying to decrypt them. This option does not affect the security of KeyScrambler's encryption. Note: this option is not compatible with HP notebooks that have the QuickPlay software installed. You should either disable this option or uninstall QuickPlay.

IV. Manually Install KeyScrambler Personal

The best way to install all three KeyScrambler products is always use the KeyScrambler installer. In very rare cases, KeyScrambler Personal, a browser add-on, needs to be installed manually.

Please NOTE: KeyScrambler Pro and Premium are full-fledged programs since v2.0. and do not require manual installation under any circumstance.

To install for Firefox, please follow these steps:
  1. Start Firefox.
  2. Select "File -> Open File".
  3. Browse to the KeyScrambler installation folder (by default "C:\Program Files\KeyScrambler").
  4. Open the file named "keyscrambler.xpi" and follow the prompts.
