Frequently Asked Questions about Monesafe

Using Monesafe

  1. After I download Monesafe, can I start viewing my transactions right away?
    Answer

You need to add the website that holds your account(s) to Monesafe first. If you've already signed up for online banking with your bank and credit card companies, adding websites should be fairly simple.

By the way, signing up for online banking is easy. Call your bank, and the representative you talk to will you send you by email a user name and a password for login. That's all.

  2. If I sign up for online banking with my bank and credit card companies, do I still need Monesafe?
    Answer

Yes, because Monesafe does many things that your online banking doesn't do for you. The two most important features of Monesafe are anti-phishing and accounts monitoring. If you have a checking account and a couple of credit cards, you'll be glad to have Monesafe do the automatic updates and bring, at your convenience, as often as you want, all your latest account transactions to you. In short, Monesafe just makes your online banking so much easier and safer
  3. How frequently should I monitor my transactions?
    Answer

It depends. We recommend that, for personal accounts, you monitor your transactions daily because you will certainly remember the purchases you've made on one day, so it'd be easier (and quicker, too) to detect fraudulent charges should they occur. For business use, you may want to update more frequently since you may have more financial activity in a day. To save time, you can simply let the program run in the background while you work on something else on your computer and look at your transactions when you're ready for a break.
  4. If I use Monesafe, do I still need to look at my annual credit report from the three credit bureaus?
    Answer

For your peace of mind, get one. It's free, and it complements our program in protecting you from identity thieves. Your daily monitoring of your accounts in Monesafe will give you a pretty good idea if your identity has been tampered with, since most fraud shows up in bank withdrawals and credit card charges. But sometimes (though not as often), fraudsters may open new accounts with stolen personal information, and your annual credit report is the only way to find out if your credit record is what it should be.
  5. I haven't signed up for my online accounts yet but am thinking of doing so. Can I sign up in Monesafe?
    Answer

Yes, that is, if your bank offers online signup. Some banks only let you sign up through the phone or in person at a local branch. Call to find out.
  6. I don't remember my bank's URL, can I still use Monesafe?
    Answer

Yes. Click on Add Website to bring up the alphabet. You can either click on the relevant letter or enter the name of your bank to get the website address you want. If your bank's URL is not available in the database, click Search for URL to do a Google search and copy and paste the URL into Monesafe.
  7. I'm in a foreign country where English is not an official language. Can I use Monesafe?
    Answer

Sorry, Monesafe supports only English-language websites at this time. In the future it may include other languages and banking systems.

Common Issues

  1. Recently I've changed the password to one of my credit card accounts and Monesafe just stopped updating that account. What should I do?
    Answer

Go to Websites and click on the said credit card company. Then click on Edit Site/Login Info. Go to your credit card's website. Log in to your account with your new password as if adding a new account. Monesafe will save the new account info for subsequent automatic updates.
  2. I got only the transactions for the last two weeks. What if I want earlier ones?
    Answer

Banks typically display only the recent transactions in your online accounts, that explains why you got only two weeks' worth. For earlier transactions, you'll have to go to your bank statements or call up your bank for information. Now that points to another advantage of Monesafe: It saves the history of your transactions permanently on your computer.

Troubleshooting Tips

  1. I tried to contact my bank by clicking on Contact Institution but came to a page that said "This page cannot be displayed." What was going on?
    Answer

The bank's website might be down, which happens from time to time with all websites. If you were trying to report a fraudulent charge, you probably shouldn't wait. An immediate phone call to the financial institution would be a good solution in this case. If it's not the site, please email us.
  2. Monesafe suddenly stopped updating one of my accounts. What should I do?
    Answer

Most likely your bank or credit card company has changed something on its website. Click on the said account in Websites and then on Edit Site/Login Info to keep Monesafe up to date on the changes. If that doesn't work, please email us.
